Today’s clip: My Unicorn (I would normally include a brand new music clip, but this one’s not that old, and it suits the message I want to convey)
Stop taking yourself so seriously. You’re not the next Jean-Michel Jarre and neither am I. There is only one Jean-Michel Jarre. The same goes for any other artist you like. Jean-Michel was never the next anyone except himself, and the same goes for you and me.
Being the next ___ isn’t going to make your music better. They’re them and you’re you.
Stop taking yourself so seriously. Famous artists might inhabit dozens of social media sites, with photos, 3rd person texts about themselves, thousands of Facebook fans, regular twitter updates, advertisements and so on. Is there any point to it for you or me?
Being all over social media isn’t going to make your music better. It’s really really cool to meet likeminded people, but overdoing it can distract from other good things in life.
Stop taking yourself so seriously. Enough with the unnecessary, nausea-inducing 3rd person lifestories/biographies/chronicles/tales/etc. 3rd person indicates that you’re writing about someone else. You’re writing about yourself, so write in 1st person. How would you introduce yourself and your music to someone in real life?
3rd person walls of texts are definitely not going to make your music better! Write short ones in 1st person. Please. If you must, write long self-indulging blog posts like I do.
Stop taking yourself so seriously. Stop plastering huge photos of yourself on your releases and websites! I hate to break this to you, but your ugly mug doesn’t even qualify as album art. Deal with it. What does electronic music have to do with human faces anyway?
Photos of yourself aren’t going to make your music better. People might buy it, disappointed by not finding any boyband music on it.
Stop taking yourself so seriously. Lots of music has been made without one-finger melodies, excessive treble, autotune, no dynamics, mediocre vocalists and all the other things that the kids are into nowadays. Imagination is better for you and everyone else. Perfection and conformism won’t get you anywhere.
Copying the cool kids isn’t going to make your music better. Neither you or I are one of the cool kids, we’re dorks. Dorks who copy the cool kids are even dorkier. Eventually you’ll realise most of the “cool kids” lack your strengths anyway.
Stop taking yourself so seriously. You don’t need all that expensive equipment you’re drooling over. People have created far better music than you probably ever will, with far worse resources. Timeless anthems have been created with 8 bit sound, not to mention Beethoven who wrote an entire symphony with pen and paper, without his hearing!
Having the best equipment isn’t going to make your music better. Develop your mind instead so you won’t be dependant on top shelf possessions.
Stop taking yourself so seriously. Don’t be discouraged because you can’t think of any good ideas. The world of music goes on fantastically despite your absence. Making music should be fun; the second it’s not, go do something else that you enjoy. No-one’s life is depending on your music.
Being frustrated by writer’s block isn’t going to make your music better. If making music is making you miserable, you’re doing it wrong!
Stop taking yourself so seriously. Taking yourself seriously is what you should not do! You’ll never reach perfection, cause you’ll always find points of improvement. The first second I opened Dance eJay around 10 years ago, I had the exact same joy and enthusiasm as I do now. It pains me to see people take themselves so seriously.
Stop taking yourself seriously. No-one else does anyway
And just for the record, I’ve written this blog post partly to keep my mind focused in times of doubt. It’s hard not to get influenced by all those who take themselves so seriously!
