Blogs I read

No music or music tech blogs

I must say, I’m not familiar with any other music production blogs that discuss things like imagination, visualising, mindset, and such. I mostly read blogs within the so-called personal development category, which I believe are more useful, both for music creation and plenty other areas in one’s life.

At least within electronic dance music, where I “come from”, I never hear any discussion among producers about storytelling. Topics about inspiration and creativity arise from time to time, but I feel that these often focus on the music creation as a mechanical process. It’s art, not engineering.

There’s nothing about music on these blogs, but lots of good advice, life wisdom, and well written enjoyable posts. Far more useful for your mind and imagination than computer music’s “step-by-step” or “how to sound like” articles. Those are good for music engineering; not so much for the sadly overlooked storytelling aspect of it.

Lots of great and interesting articles about creativity, motivation, personal development experiments and more.

Art of Manlinesshttp://artofmanliness.com/

The name is cheesy, but the posts are well written and down to earth. The variety of topics makes navigation slightly difficult, but it’s well worth your time.

Fluent in 3 monthshttp://www.fluentin3months.com/

This is a language learning blog, but the articles are about the reasons for learning a language, and how to get into the correct mindset. Reading this guy’s great posts played a role in convincing me to spend a semester abroad in Peru, South America.

Mark’s daily applehttp://www.marksdailyapple.com//welcome-to-marks-daily-apple/

Health and well-being is important, also for sedentary music imaginators.

The Minimalistshttp://www.theminimalists.com/

The advantages of having less stuff, as well as general life wisdom.

Scott H Younghttp://www.scotthyoung.com/blog/

The main purpose is how to learn things, but I also find the posts about health, social skills and life philosophy really interesting.

Steve Pavlinahttp://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/

The largest blog of its kind. Check out the “best of” posts in the left column.

Study Hackshttp://calnewport.com/blog/

As he says, talent is overrated. He also writes about how to minimise stress and simultaneously get better results at your studies. I’ve read two of his books, and they’re really well written and easy to follow. Essential reading for any student.

Zen Habitshttp://zenhabits.net/start/

Another very large blog about how to slow down and see things from a good perspective.
